I have been DYING to get over to Conowingo to see these birds, but what with family things and then falling on the ice and hurting my back, I haven't been able to get out there. > but I > believe these birds have a legitimate chance to be countable. I don't care if they are countable or not. I think this is a great opportunity to study a bird that we don't get to see around here. I have seen non-countable Trumpeters on the upper peninsula in Michigan, and possibly one real wild bird, with no band. They are great to look at regardless of whether they can be ticked off. > I suspect > they are from the Great Lakes breeding population. It seemed to me that if these were escapes from a licensed program, surely someone would have spoken up, and I am glad to hear that in fact none of the banded swans are missing. I am excited about the possible historical significance - when was the last time that a wild Trumpeter was seen on the Eastern Shore - 1920 or thereabouts? Because of these posts from Rick and Paul, I am going to redouble my efforts to get over there for a look. I hope that anyone who has any information or other educated guesses about the origin of these birds will post to MDOsprey.
