Someone posted a lament (perhaps jokingly) about when the poor Kelp Gull would get back to its food source of kelp. But I confess that I did wonder what it should be eating. By luck, I was doing my lunch-break check on the bird when I met a group of Bucks County, PA, birders that included Alan Brady, who had George E. Watson's Birds of the Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic. The description of the Kelp Gull states that limpets are the kelp gull's primary food (swallowed whole, so it's no wonder it doesn't mind some soft shrimp casings!), and that crustaceans, mollusks, fish, and insects (well, and eggs and baby birds, but we won't remind this kelp gull of that). At least we know why it's lovin' life at the Sea Breeze! Jane Kostenko jkostenko@somd.lib.md.us California, Maryland Yesterday is history; tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift.
