The St. Mary's County, MD, Kelp Gull was present at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 7, until I bailed out at 7:05 a.m. Gale force winds out of the NW will ensure below-zero windchill temperatures all day. The gulls, including the Kelp Gull, were hanging in the wind or hunkered down on the pier of the Sandgates Restaurant this morning, though all piers should be checked, if the bird isn't immediately obvious. The Kelp Gull was flying occasionally, so the two birders there with me at sunrise had great looks at the mirror. Please note that I have been taping a piece of paper with the daily sunrise sighting to both front and back glass doors of the Sea Breeze restaurant, so if you arrive early, you can always check there about whether or not the bird was seen and where. On a personal note, I had considered snagging the comics section out of the paper at the top of the driveway on my way to see the gull this morning, but then realized that nothing could beat the hilarity of joining other birders to freeze solid while looking at a gull. Now *that's* funny! Jane Kostenko jkostenko@somd.lib.md.us California, Maryland Yesterday is history; tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why they call it the PRESENT.
