Jane & Tyler,

It was great meeting you both on Saturday AM. Once again the Kelp put on a
great showing, and I was pleased to be able to show it to my friend Mike. Mike
has been house-bound for a few months, unable to bird as often as he likes and
the trip to St. Mary's county was terrific. After viewing the gull, and
getting directions to Point Lookout sites from you, we headed down there. The
fishing pier gave us great looks at (only) two scoter species (white-winged
and surf), Red-breasted Mergs, lots of Oldsquaws (many already changing to
alternate plumage), Lesser Scaup, and a lone gannet.
Point Lookout offered us Common Loons, more oldsquaws, Horned Grebes, and a
few more "performing" gannets. It was a great day, and we even managed to
avoid most of the rain, having driven through the bulk of it.
It was nice to meet you both, and thanks to Tyler for the excellent looks
through his scope at the Kelp Gull. You two should probably get a special
commendation from MOS for your efforts to help everyone get on this bird, and
for acting , in general, as birding hosts to St. Mary's County!
