Wearily I write that the St. Mary' s County, MD, Kelp Gull was NOT present on Monday, March 15, 1999, neither at 7 a.m. nor 11:45 a.m. Strong winds, driving rain mixed with sleet, and cold temps made for miserable conditions for the birds and the lone birder present. After the gull's reappearance on Sunday, weather deteriorated, and the folks at the Sea Breeze said they'd last seen the bird around 1:30 or 2 p.m., after which it did not come back (at least, not before 5:30 p.m., when I talked with them). They said they were bored; there weren't any visiting birders to visit with! Predicted overnight lows below freezing tonight likely mean icy roads in the morning, so I will likely not go to look for the gull until later in the morning. The folks at the Sea Breeze Restaurant have offered to give updates. You may call them at 301-373-5217. Today is a gift. That's why they call it the PRESENT.
