Tim and I went out to the Shady Grove Campus of the U of Md on Saturday and found woodcocks displaying in the field near the pond. It's important to wait until it's dark -- on our first try, last year, we got there at dusk and heard and saw nothing. Only after it was good and dark did they start to call and display. Of course, if there isn't a good deal of moonlight, it's hard to follow the flights, but they generally land in about the same place they left. On Saturday, one landed right near us, and when we turned our flashlights on, it ran towards us! It also helps to be very quiet and stand still.
