My apologies to the list for responding to personal e-mail and somehow sending it to everyone. I am not at my computer and I guess I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. Since I am posting, I might as well mention that I spent this morning birding in California along San Francisco Bay, watching thousands of shorebirds feeding on the mudflats. The highlight were Western and Least Sandpipers, Dunlin, Marbled Godwits, Whimbrels, Buffleheads, Canvasbacks, and Western and Clark's Grebes. I watched a pair of Western Grebes go through a vocal mating ritual and then "run" over the water in unision -- something I had only seen on TV nature shows prior to this. It was quite spectacular. I'm heading over the Palo Alto Baylands this afternoon to look for rails and do some photography. Arlene Ripley Calvert County, MD
