Jim

I drove back from Ohio yesterday and stopped at a couple of
spots in Garrett Co. doing some county listing. Not a good day to
bird. Lots of blowing rain, ice, and snow cut down on visibility
and pleasure. There had been lots of rain the previous day as
well. The songbird don't seem to have arrived yet or the weather
kept them down. It was nasty.

I picked up 11 new county birds. My first gull, like you, was
Bonaparte's - not my close out selection of Ring-billed. I
eventually got Ring-billed near the sewage treatment plant in
Oakland. The boney was in McHenry. I also had Horned Grebe,
Lesser Scaup, Red-breasted Merganser and Ruby-crowned
Kinglet in McHenry.

Other birds in Oakland were Green-winged Teal, Blue-winged
Teal, Hooded Merganser, Lesser Yellowlegs, American Pipet, as
well as Larus delawarensis.

I looked for at least five hours with no luck for the White-throated
Sparrow. They may not have arrived in Garrett yet or were
elsewhere. I stopped in Bloomington also. Chipping sparrows
were a number of locations but no WTSP. My half day list was 42
species - not bad for the weather conditions.

If you are planning a trip out that way in the next couple of weeks I
would be interested in going with you. My Garrett list is up to 157
so I should, with any luck, get over 160 toward 170.
