The manager of the Sea Breeze Restaurant reports having seen the = Kelp Gull on their pier daily on April 8, 9, 10, and 11 (they had = misplaced my phone number and weren't able to relocate it until Sunday, = when we were out of town). He reports that the bird usually shows up = first thing in the morning (as early as 7 a.m.) and stays for only a few = hours before leaving. On April 11, the bird was also back in the afternoon around 4 p.m. A = visiting birder from New York state emailed to me today, April 14, to = say he arrived at the Sea Breeze at 5 p.m. and found the Kelp Gull on = pilings behind the Sandgates Restaurant, though it soon moved over to = the Sea Breeze, where it perched on a light pole (it has a favorite one) = for 45 minutes. Despite making visits to the restaurants each day since (Monday, = Tuesday, and today), we have not seen the bird. However, the manager of = the Sea Breeze believes he saw the Kelp Gull in early April on a fishing = net set-up in the water off Golden Beach (also in St. Mary's County). = Patty Craig, who originally found the bird in January, 1998, went to the = Golden Beach area April 12 and said viewing conditions were poor (high = winds, no good place to look out at the water, long distance to the = fishing nets), but was interested in checking it out again. In short, if you haven't yet seen the Kelp Gull, you just might be = the one to see it when it shows up. If you do see it, please email me or = call me at the numbers listed below, so I can keep a running sighting = log. Thanks, and good luck!
