Gail Frantz and I returned to Jug Bay Sunday, April 25 (the Black Walnut
Creek area and the wildlife drive). The birding was OK, but a little
slow. Here are some highlights:

11 warbler species:
Northern Parula ~10
Yellow-rumped Warbler ~10
Black-throated Green Warbler 1
Yellow-throated Warbler 2
Pine Warbler 1
Prairie Warbler 3
Palm Warbler (yellow) 1
American Redstart 2
Ovenbird ~5
Common Yellowthroat ~10
Hooded Warbler 3

Shorebirds:

Greater Yellowlegs ~10
Lesser Yellowlegs ~10
Spotted Sandpiper 2
Least Sandpiper ~10 (all at Merkle's main pond)

The Prairie Warblers were just north of the Merkle observation tower
trail. The Yellow-throated Warblers were surprisingly scarce (one at
Merkle's boardwalk, one at NE Croom airport).

We were hoping for tanagers, especially Summer Tanagers, but didn't get
any. A young lady told us she DID get both Summer and Scarlet Tanager at
the little side road at the NE corner of the old Croom airport. We had
stopped there earlier, and then returned in late afternoon, but didn't
get either tanager.

Local notes:

Saturday April 24 I stopped briefly at the trail-head road for the
Liberty Dam trail off Marriottsville Rd. There was a singing
Yellow-throated Warbler that gave me really great eye-level looks. Also
a Parula and a La Waterthrush.

I also had a Yellow-throated Warbler in my Randallstown yard on April 16
which is remarkable considering the lack of habitat. It's the only
warbler I've had in my yard this season. Chipping Sparrows have been
relatively thick (up to 5 at at a time) in the yard most days since
April 1. I usually only see them for a few days in spring and fall.
