Members of the Talbot County Chapter of MOS took twenty bright-eyed
fourth-graders of St.Michaels Elementary School on a birdwalk at
Blackwater Wildlife Refuge this morning (4/26). The group was allowed to
list only those birds that most of the 20 had seen - but even with that
restriction, the total count was 35 species.

"New" this year for the leaders included Orchard Oriole and Eastern
Kingbird.

Bald Eagles co-operated very well to give the students some great views.
We saw at least seven separate birds, and often several were soaring over
our heads seeming to be checking the group out. The biggest hit came from
the surprise find of a Screech Owl dozing in full view for us at a spot
less than 20 ft above the ground and 20 ft away from the foot-path that we
were following. Now that was a truly gratifying bird! (Gray phase adult.)
