     Tim,

     WESTERN STRIPE-HEADED TANAGER (smallish, sparrow-sized instead of
     Cardinal-sized), Bahamian race (it had a black back instead of the
     green back of the Cuban race).  There was speculation initially about
     the Cuban race since this is only the second (I believe) record for
     the West Coast of Florida.

     So which Stipe-headed Tanager was it? The species has been been split
     into four
     species - Peurto Rican, Hispaniolan, Western, and Jamaican (see: A
     Guide to the
     Birds of the West Indies,1998).
     Probably Western... although if no-one has checked it could be a
     first... (you
     might have to get a DNA sample though).
