At my home near Fair Hill, Cecil County, this morning, some
of the more interesting birds:
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (1)
Black-throated Green Warbler (2)
American Redstart (2)
Prairie Warbler (3)
Yellow-rumped Warbler (>10)
Black-and White Warbler (4)
Common Yellowthroat (6)
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (1)
White-eyed Vireo (3)
Wood Thrush (3)
Baltimore Oriole (2)
Brown Thrasher (3)
Grey Catbird (4)
Hairy Woodpecker (1)
Northern Bobwhite (1)
House Wren (4)
Carolina Wren (4)

The grosbeak, redstart, and b-t green are all first of the
year in my yard. I was initially quite annoyed by the
grosbeak. I was trying to focus on a quiet song of a b-t
green so that I could find it in an almost fully leafed out
maple, when a loud hoarse song drowned everything out. "Be
quiet!" I thought in the back of my mind. Then the grosbeak
came into view near the warbler I was trying to find and I
realized that he was the source of the loud song. This is
only the second time I have had grosbeak at home. Two
Baltimore Orioles were perched in the same tree, for good
measure. Never did get a good look at the warbler.

The Hairy Woodpecker apparently didn't see me standing there
observing all those birds and flew into some dead branches
literally at my feet. Then it looked up and saw me and sort
of scooted away along the ground.

And a ps from Conowingo: Ted, the fellow who lives in his
camper truck at the dam, reports that lately, a female Wild
Turkey has been seen perched on the railing of the dam on
the Cecil end. Ken Drier, a member of the Cecil Bird Club,
saw her there earlier this week.
