Dear 'spreyers, Fran and I have returned from 2 weeks in Florida. We birded various locales in the Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami areas, as well as in the Everglades NP, down through the Keys, both coming and going, and 3 days at the Dry Tortugas, compliments of Field Guides, Inc. We managed to see 155 species of birds although missing once again the American Flamingo and dipping in two different locations for Key West Quail Dove. We had the great pleasure of sharing the Tortugas trip with Mike and Joy Bowen--good birding, huh guys? In the 12 years we've been birding on and off in South Florida this has to rate as our most successful trip to date. If anyone is interested in more detail in terms of locales visited and birds seen, let me know! If you regularly go to Loxahatchee NWR in the Boca Raton area, please be sure to ask them about the new birding area nearby called the Wakodahatchee Wetlands. This is a gem of a locale provided by the Palm Beach County water authority. It has been a long, long time since I've seen 25+ Least Bitterns in one location, almost all of them close enough for killer photos! Again, for directions to this area, ask me directly.
