With the emerging interest in bringing the Delaware Shore restrictions on Horse-shoe Crab gathering closer to those of New Jersey, it might prove useful to check with some of the New Jersey groups that brought about their policies. I would expect that the folks at the Cape May Bird Observatory would know a fair bit about who led their charge toward protecting the egg-laying crabs. Recently I filled out some kind of questionnaire from some contractor working on behalf of New Jersey coast business community. Essentially, the questions were asking how much I cared about the Horse-shoe crabs continuing to exist. There were birding questions, questions about time and $ spent along the Jersey (and Delaware) coasts, etc. Eventually they even got to the point of a question that asked how much $ I felt it would be worth (for each taxpayer) to protect the Horse-shoe crabs that use the region. So, someone is gathering such information for the region, albeit probably sponsored by the business community. Who exactly is the gatherer? Beats me; I threw the info away after filling out and returning their form. And the sponsor of the gatherer was not identified in the forms. But I expect that I was solicited because of being a member of Cape May Bird Observatory - hence I would encourage interested parties to contact CMBO about this matter.
