--UNS_gsauns2_3126063922 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Disposition: inline Hi! I decided to visit (first time) New Germany State Park on Friday in hopes of seeing a flower - the Painted Trillium. What I found was a delightful park (especially being a DC area birder) a little over 2 hours from the DC Beltway @ Route 270. I parked in Parking Lot #5 where I was greeted by a Magnolia Warbler. I did find my Painted Trillium and also Pink Ladyslipper. I walked on the road around the camping area and heard a fair number of Black-throated Green and saw at least one Magnolia Warbler. The park has a dammed stream which forms a nice lake with a wet brushy area at the end of the lake away from the dam. I walked along the lake and saw Canada Warbler, Alder Flycatcher (heard only) and Yellow Warbler. There is also large areas of hemlock trees which had Black-capped Chickadees. Since I never met a lake I never liked, I took a nice refreshing swim in the lake before taking a trail along the stream exiting from the lake. Along this very pretty mountain stream I saw Black-throated Green, Canada, Magnolia and Black-throated Blue Warblers. I was practically the only person in the park except for several fishermen. However, it probably is crowded in season. This was my first time at the park--I would appreciate any additional information about birding in and around the park. No Blackburnians but hopefully another visit will find them. The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club has a hiking guidebook specific to western Maryland that includes trails in the park (costs about $6 in "outdoors" type stores). Thanks. Happy birding, Dan Eberly --UNS_gsauns2_3126063922--
