I read with interest the report of Mississippi Kite in northern Va. My wife and I were in Duck, NC on the Outer Banks from May 20 to 24. Strong northeast winds were blowing when we arrived and blew until the 22nd of May. On the 22nd the winds shifted to the southwest. For about two hours in the middle of the day we were treated to a late season hawk migration, as birds were cruising north along the Banks. In this time we observed two kettles of 8-15 Broad-winged Hawks (most apparently immature birds and with big gaps in the outer secondary/inner primary area), a Northern Harrier, a Red-tailed Hawk, 2 Turkey Vultures, and 4 MISSISSIPPI KITES. I was surprised to see so many kites heading north from that latitude. I guess they must have kept going! David R.
