Friday we walked the trail to Mary's Rock from Thorton Gap. About 1/4 up we heard a Winter Wren. Then a Pileated Woodpecker flew to a branch of a large diameter snag. When I looked at the woodpecker with my binoculars, I saw the singing wren at the very top of the snag. We watched and listened for over 5 minutes. It was too far out to see details, but the short cocked tail was visible. We left it singing. When we came down the trail, we heard it sing a few songs, but did not see it. Charlotte Friend
