A front-page article in today's (6/24) Washington Post trumpets the fact that Constitution Gardens is a great place to watch herons! Also included is a picture of a Great Blue Heron. Actually, the article is about how all the baby ducklings hatched at the Constitution Gardens pond are eaten within 24 hours by fish and herons. As a bird-watcher, though, I have a slightly different perspective on the info. Parenthetically, I would suspect the Black-crowned Night Herons more the the Great Blue. I've wondered in the past whether the night herons are helping to control Montgomery County's Canada Goose population. Jim Jim Felley Smithsonian Institution. irmss668@sivm.si.edu
