A front-page article in today's (6/24) Washington Post trumpets
the fact that Constitution Gardens is a great place to watch
herons! Also included is a picture of a Great Blue Heron. Actually,
the article is about how all the baby ducklings hatched at the
Constitution Gardens pond are eaten within 24 hours by fish
and herons. As a bird-watcher, though, I have a slightly different
perspective on the info. Parenthetically, I would suspect the
Black-crowned Night Herons more the the Great Blue. I've wondered
in the past whether the night herons are helping to control
Montgomery County's Canada Goose population.
