(Apologies for the cross-postings you'll get for this non-sighting related news, but I did want to let folks know about the following:) Without a doubt, the staff of the Sea Breeze Restaurant deserves thanks and commendation for their superior and friendly hosting of the Kelp Gull in St. Mary's County all these months. The Maryland Ornithological Society feted one of the managers and one of the owners (the only two who were able to get away from work at the restaurant!) at MOS's annual convention held this year in Southern Maryland in mid-May, and presented the Sea Breeze with a gorgeous wooden plaque with a picture of the Kelp Gull scanned in and words of praise and thanks. The American Birding Association responded to my request with a presentation-quality certificate, which will be presented to the restaurant when we can find a time when the staff isn't so busy and when ABA's Paul Baicich can come down to do the presentation honors. The Southern Maryland Audubon Society also has a framed certificate to give the Sea Breeze at a future time, since staff were unable to come when invited to the annual SMAS picnic. All of these awards follow the personal presentation by a local nature photographer of a framed, matted, enlarged photo of the Kelp Gull, the presentation of which I photographed and ran in our local paper's business news section with an explanatory caption. Thanks to all who encouraged these groups to go the extra step and honor the Sea Breeze. I think the Sea Breeze likes birders!
