The shorebird migration is well underway in Frederick County. Birds observed at the Harney Road ponds (actually sewage lagoons) on Sunday, July 11, 1999 were: Killdeer 70 Least sandpiper 26 Pectoral sandpiper 1 Spotted sandpiper 8 Solitary sandpiper 2 Also of note in Frederick County were 4 singing male Dickcissels and one observed female along Oland road. Also present were: Savannah sparrow 4 singing males Grasshopper sparrow 6 singing males Eastern meadowlark 2 singing males Bobolink 6 males on July 10 There were two singing male Dickcissels in a mowed filed on Lily Pons road the same day. Question: Is there any state or Federal program to compensate farmers for leaving fields un-mowed/un-harvested to benefit grassland birds. (Yea right...) Also seen in Fred. Co. were two Cliff swallows at the ponds on Willow road. Good Birding! Wil Hershberger
