Hello all,

Below are the results of a July Big Day attempted Saturday, July 17, by
myself, Greg Miller, and Todd Day. Hot and humid, we fortunately spent the
worst part of the day in air condtioning and birded primarily only in the
more pleasant morning and evening. I'd call the day a success, and we picked
up some decent birds considering the late date. Still, there were a lot of
misses and there is certainly room for improvement. 190 might be
possible....

The Route generally began at Lilipons then flew out to Cumberland and
on to Garrett County (Mosser Rd. and Cherry Creek Glades and Combination Rd.
for Henslow's Sparrow). By dawn we were at Roth Rock Rd. (Mourning Warbler
and junco), proceeded through Pleasant Valley, down Snaggy Mountain Rd., to
Cranesville Swamp, down Maple Glade Rd. to Swallow Falls, up to New Germany
SP, then Little Meadow Lake, and Finzel Swamp. We left Garrett County at
10:30 a.m., stopped quickly for a run down to the river in Hancock from 11:15
to noon, and a run down to Lilipons at 1:15-1:45. Then, as quickly as we
could we squeezed in Tanyard (moorhen), Hurlock (swan, Snow Goose,
shorebirds) before bolting to Ocean City (OC). 45 minutes later we started a
meandering route through the Pocomoke and Nassawango drainages. We finally
made it to Deal Island a bit too late at 8:15, but stll with enough light to
pick up a few more key species. For the p.m. hours we tried for
Whip-poor-wills and Chucks without success, finally finishing at Elliot
Island where we added Barn Owl and Least Bittern. Most frustrating bird of
the day was the Common Raven we saw flying just over the MD line in West
Virginia.
There were no real surprises - Whimbrel, Mourning Warbler, American
Bittern, Sharp- shinned Hawk, and American Coot were good to pick up. Bird
song essentially ended by 9:00 which cost us Cerulean Warbler and a few
others. It was generally quiet, but most breeders were still making some
noise near dawn. Washington County was miserable at 11:00, but we managed to
dig out Blue-winged Warbler and Worm-eaters, if not Warbling Vireo and
Baltimore Oriole. Trying for the Dickcissels at Frederick was costly and we
were generally running quite slowly and about an hour behind schedule by the
time we hit the Bay Bridge. We managed to get most all of our Ocean City
stuff and even got all of our Pocomoke drainage stuff (except Ovenbird and
Kentucky Warbler). We ended up getting to Deal Island late though and thus
missed Sharp-tailed Sparrow (might also have gotten a few more shorebirds,
Blue-winged Teal, or perhaps something else).
Below is a complete species list with some notes on approximate
numbers and locations.

Best,

Marshall Iliff
