I got this via private email, and I do not know if it has been on any other lists. I figured some of you may be interested in reading and/or acting upon this. Todd Day Jeffersonton, VA _____________________________________________________________________ << Subject: pétition sur la sauvegarde des oiseaux sur le site www.lapetition.com No doubt you're aware of the virulent opposition of French "hunters" to any limits whatsover on their "right" to shoot any old bird they want any old time they want.......and even a "secret" trip by a recent Prime Minister to be the guest at a feast composed of migratory songbirds. Last time I was in Paris, I was on an elevated metro line, and heard a lot of gunfire. On a street below I saw a Sunday afternoon parade of birdgunners from all over France marching to protest the action of Parliament in passing national legislation to bring France conformity with EU laws and regulations on this matter......and the durned parliament, in July 1998 (ut infra) did in fact pass a law allowing the taking of endangered species! Where is Madame Defarge when we need her? You may wish to visit the website indicated at the end of this message, to "sign" the petition itself, and then to pass it on to other birders...... Date inscription : 10/10/1998 Under the pressure of the French hunting lobby, the French parliamenthas adopted the 3 july 1998 law that gives on all of the nationalterritory a period to hunt migratory birds far too long and not compatible with the biology of the birds. These same lobby wish to modify the 1979 European directive on the conservation of wild birds during their nesting and pre-nuptial migratory seasons. It asks for"freedom to hunt" between july and february! This is why France Nature Environnement, the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux, Birdlife International and their partners ask:- the european parliament, given the articles 8D and 138D of the UnionTreaty, not to modify the bird directive;- and the French government to abrogate the 3 july 1998 law, and to forbid hunting of species with a poor conservation state in Europe. By my signature, I support this petition because the migratory birds are an international natural richness that does not belong to any country,or to any category of users, and that deserves an increased protection.
