Shorebirds down, landbirds up at Lake Roland today. SHOREBIRDS: killdeer 1 spotted 1 peep 1 (seen in the air only, landed in an inaccessible marsh) HERONS: y-c night heron 3 immatures b-c night heron 2-3 immatures green heron 2 gb heron 1 WARBLERS: black and white 1 Am. redstart 1-2 ovenbird 2 N. waterthrush 1 NOTES: Water level in the lake is up a little from mid-July (strange). Shorebird conditions are not especially good. Second redstart is a "probable." I saw just a flash of a warbler with a touch of orange on the breast-- think it was a young male redstart. It's very unusual to see an ovenbird on the main trails at Lake Roland (too many dogs). Today there were two. One was sluggish-- probably had just flown in. My guess is that all the warblers except the redstarts were migrants. Redstarts were seen near a usual nesting area, so who knows. On my way out of the park I met Eddie Slaughter, a longtime Balt. Bird Club member who birded Lake Roland frequently from 1969-1989. She was looking for a redheaded woodpecker, which she used to find near the park entrance. To my knowledge, these have not been seen at Lake Roland for several years. It makes me sad when birds disappear from their regular haunts. On the other hand, Mrs. Slaughter and I had a good time comparing notes on a heron that turned out to be an immature black-crowned. Peter Lev Towson, MD
