This morning at 0710 EDT the American White Pelican was feeding off the shore of Fox Ferry Point (just south of the I-285 bridge over the mouth of Oxon Creek). Visible from Alexandria waterfront south of King Street. (The lighting was better from there than from Jones Point.) So if you are looking for the bird and can't find it on the hydrilla mat north of the Wilson Bridge (in the afternoon at least, the best viewing is from the end of Jones Point Road, on the water just N of the bridge), it is worth checking from the various Alexandria parks at least up to Founder's Park. To reassure Phil, both the secondary pattern and the soft part coloration are sufficient to rule out other white pelican species. Cheers, good birding, and more cold fronts ...
