On the rising tide in the early afternoon (1350 to 1510 EDT) Sunday, 22 Aug, the surprisingly small (& shrinking) delta flats to the West of the GW Parkway bridge held good numbers (and a good diversity) of shorebirds (if one ignored the White Pelican off to the East of the bridge over the already flooded bar): Killdeer 30+ Greater Yellowlegs 49 (with 2 more flying off E of the bridge) Lesser Yellowlegs 23 Semipalmated Sandpiper c 18 Western Sandpiper 2 Least Sandpiper 110 White-rumped Sandpiper 2 (ad) Pectoral Sandpiper 14 Short-billed Dowitcher 8 Long-billed Dowitcher 1 (seemingly same bird on & off since 31 July) Laughing Gull 115 Ring-billed Gull 280 Caspian Tern 28 ad, 13 im Forster's Tern 89 ad, 6 im Sherman Suter Alexandria VA 22307 ssuter@aaas.org
