Hi all -- First bird for the day was a Common Nighthawk just before we reached Chevy Chase Circle, coming down from Silver Spring (us, not the Nighthawk). At first it looked like it was going to be a good morning, sun hitting the trees at the ridge (picnic areas 17/18 in DC), and we tallied quite a few early birds, but then the clouds gathered, the air got heavy and sultry and things pretty much shut down by 9 am. Species observed: Yellow-billed Cuckoo (1); Easter Wood-pewee (5); Eastern Phoebe (1); Warblers: Black-and-white (5); Canada (1); Chestnut-sided (5); American Redstart (9); Magnolia (8); Common Yellowthroat (1); Wormeating (1); Blue-winged (1). No Orioles, Tanagers and a real decline in Flycatchers from two days ago. Gail Mackiernan
