Only the back two rows of parking weren't under standing water. = Waves were breaking on and over beach. Gale force winds -- beautiful. = Saw 2 Leach's Storm-petrels at about 10 A.M.flying OUT of inlet. Deep = stroking mightily and making slow headway. They were near enough to get = a good look at the rump band.=20 At about 11 A.M. an all dark looking medium sized tern came in over the = grren buoy and staggered toward the inlet. When it reached the jetty = either it collapsed or was blown down into a trough. We could see it = struggle in the water flapping and twisting as it was pushed by the wind = and incoming tide. As it passed us it was upright and we could see the = white mottling, the long thin bill and tail of the imm. Sooty Tern. About a half hour later 2 more dark-backed terns flew in. We could see = dark heads and contrasting underparts. Think they were adult Sootys but = a rain band limited vision and we can't eliminate wet Bridled in bad = light. After leaving the inlet we tried to get to skimmer I. but were turned = back by some street flooding. We went to the fields on Golf Course = Rd.behind the Exxon station and found an imm. Bridled Tern sitting in = with about 35 Forsters, 6 Caspians and a mixed group of gulls. Viewed it = from about 20 ft. for about 10 minutes until an UPS truck barreled down = the road and scattered the flock. The last we saw, it was flying towards = the bay. Continued to Harbor Rd. in marina where there were about 60 black = skimmers and a large mixed flock of terns and gulls but viewing had = crashed and ID impossible. In midst of the storm the sun came out for = about two minutes and a flock of a few thousand tree swallows flew from = the north end of Assateague.
