Flag Ponds Nature Park, Calvert County, MD Highlights from Tuesday morning 10/5: Osprey -- 2 Bald Eagle -- 2 Dunlin -- 1 Green Heron -- 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler -- 15 Red-shouldered Hawk -- 2 Pine Warbler -- 1 American Redstart -- 1 Black-throated Blue Warbler -- 1 Blackpoll Warbler -- 1 Brown Thrasher -- 1 Gray Catbird -- 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet -- 2 I also had the pleasure of watching a River Otter catching fish in Duncan's Pond. It would dive under the thick blanket of duckweed which would cause the small fish to jump out of the water and land on the duckweed. Before they could wiggle their way back into the water, the otter would simply scoop them up in its mouth. There has been much hurricane damage to the trails at Flag Ponds, in fact they are still closed to the general public due to fallen trees and mudslides. The crew there is working hard to get them cleared and re-opened. Beach damage was nil from Hurricane Floyd. ////// Arlene Ripley | || Calvert County, MD | 0 || aripley@nestbox.com | || http://www.nestbox.com ||
