Among lots of other birds, I found 2 Winter Wrens at Lake Needwood Park, off Avery Road (off Muncaster Mill Rd) in Montgomery Co. The area I birded was the wooded ridge to the west of the hiking- biking trail. The wrens were on the shrubby hillside of the ridge, next to the mowed field. Other birds included: Ruby-crowned Kinglet (many) Golden-crowned Kinglet (several) Eastern Towhee (many) White-throated Sparrow (many) Blue-headed Vireo (several) Common Yellowthroat (several) Blue Jay (many) Northern Flicker (several) Eastern Phoebe (2-3) Other birds seen singly included Pine Warbler Yellow-bellied Sapsucker Downy Woodpecker Hairy Woodpecker Red-bellied Woodpecker Wood Thrush Chipping Sparrow Red-tailed Hawk Also plenty of Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, Northern Cardinals, etc. A beaver was once busy clearing the ridge (very ambitious) and the open areas are filled with grape vines and other berry trees.
