The cold front brought a good flight of migrants to Rock Creek Park, DC, in the vicinity of the Nature Center and west ridge (picnic areas 17/18). The highlight for us was a wonderfully cooperative ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER feeding at eye level in shrubs in the Maintenance Yard. Looked like a fall adult, having quite olive back, strong yellow wash on sides and undertail coverts, with gray face and nape, underparts yellowish with faint grey/olive streaks. All in all, 11 species of warblers were seen (not all by us): most numerous was Yellow-rumped (35-40), others included Black-throated Blue (3), Black- throated Green (4), Blackpoll (6), Yellowthroat (2), Magnolia (1), Chestnut- sided (1), Cape May (1), Nashville (1), Palm (2). Other migrants: PHILADELPHIA VIREO (1, at ridge), Blue-headed Vireo (5), Scarlet Tanager (3), Rose-breasted Grosbeak (1), Eastern Phoebe (5), Ruby-crowned Kinglet (~20), Golden-crowned Kinglet (5), RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH (6 at least), House Wren (2), Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (2), Gray Catbird (2 only!), Brown Thrasher (1), HERMIT THRUSH (6), Cedar Waxwing (15), White-throated Sparrow (20), Chipping Sparrow (8), Field Sparrow (4), Swamp Sparrow (2). Heard were Pine Siskin and Winter Wren (unfortunately, not by us!) Cheers, Gail Mackiernan and Barry Cooper
