Over the weekend, we had to go to West Virginia to check on some property we own there. The property is located just a few miles south of Hancock, Maryland. On Sunday Morning, I took a walk and the presence of more northern species was evident. In this location, while I have seen Black-capped Chickadee before, it's usually just one or two birds. Nearly half of the Chickadees I saw and heard were Black-capped. Juncos were everywhere. Red-breasted Nuthatch was there along with about 8 Purple Finches. Lincoln's Sparrow was still visiting by a small stream. In with the Goldfinches were (yes, Phil, I'm in on the conspiracy) Pine Siskins. The only thing I missed seeing was Redpoll, Evening Grosbeak and Crossbills To top things off, on the way home on Rt 70 at the Clear Spring Exit an adult Northern Goshawk flew across the road. I'm looking forward to more of this invasion. Good Birding, Darius Ecker (dariuse@abs.net) Columbia, Maryland USA
