Hi all --

Barry and I made a visit to Layhill Park, Montgomery Co., MD today -- to
look for field birds primarily. We started out on the high ridge on the east
side of Northwest Branch, and then did the west side along the trails. Again,
the order of the day was Sparrows -- but we had some other nice birds as well.
The most interesting from an "invasion-year" point of view were the 4
PURPLE FINCHES we saw, including a nice male. (We had had one female yesterday
in NW Branch Park, so they are on the move locally).

Sparrows: Song (~100), Whitethroated (~75), Chipping (~70), Swamp (25), Field
(15), White-crowned (8), Junco (25), VESPER (1), FOX (1, first for the autumn
for us). Other nice birds: Eastern Bluebird (~100), Palm Warbler (20-25, incl.
two Western ), TENNESSEE Warbler (1), PRAIRIE (1), Eastern Phoebe (8),
Winter Wren (1), Rusty Blackbird (2), Brown Thrasher (1), lots of Robins,
Waxwings and Blue Jays overhead.

Phil Davis will be pleased to hear that (despite plenty of Goldfinches about)
we DID NOT HAVE ANY SISKINS! They are undoubtedly frolicking at the various
feeders in the neighborhood (but not ours, sigh...)

We returned home to hear a Redbreasted Nuthatch in the yard...
