Hi folks,

Just went out briefly to show a couple friends some good
locations for winter birds, so the list isn't very high -
though I did have a couple season firsts for myself.

Browns Station landfill: apparently these folks are
related in some way to the CIA, judging from the cameras,
the speaker-relayed conversations, etc. It seems that
technically you need prior approval to enter their grounds.
The contact person is: Robert Flotcher, number is
301-952-7610 (do you have that, Fran?) It seems that they
sometimes relax this restriction on weekends when the truck
traffic is lighter. For a good laugh, check out the
"Landfill Rules and Regulations" booklet. No loitering, no
smoking at the dump, etc etc. ha ha.
We did see a sharpie attack a large mixed group of
black birds, trying several times to no avail. Also, 2
Red-Taileds, many gulls (mostly not identified, but we ID'd
one Greater Black-backed and a bunch of Laughing Gulls.

Not able to get in there, we went to the recycling station
that is actually on Brown's Station Road. Got the
following:
2 male Hooded Mergs
7-8 Green-winged Teal
50+ Canada Geese
2 Mallards
1 Kingfisher
1 Mocker
1 Cardinal
several White-throated Sparrows
numerous vultures flying over head - both species

Then we drove to Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary - one of the
best underbirded spots in the state, IMHO

I always stop at the marsh on Croom Station Road on the way
in, though it wasn't up to par today at 1:30 pm:
Mallards
Canadas
Green-winged Teal

Merkle:
I was very disappointed not to find White-crowned Sparrows,
as they're very regular in winter. Danny Bystrak has
commented that they are overdue in the mist nets across the
river at Jug Bay, so maybe they're just late getting down
the Pax?

Gadwall
Mallard
2 SNOW GEESE
many, many killdeer
5 or more Red-tailed Hawks
7-8 Wigeon (couldn't turn any into Europeans)
And just one feral goose (gotta be careful there)

Good birding!

Charlie
