Hilarious story, Gail. I'd be willing to bet it was a Carolina Wren. They 
love "odd" places to roost (and nest). I keep a hanging wire basket on my 
back porch filled with sphagnum moss and a baffle over the top to keep the 
moss dry. The wrens use this basket year-round for roosting. They always 
build a nest on our garage shelf in the spring and this year successfully 
raised young on it (we left the door open about an inch at the bottom).
