Merritt" <pemerritt@EROLS.COM> Subject: [VA-BIRD] Black Scoter/Fairfax County To: VA-BIRD@LIST.AUDUBON.ORG All, This afternoon, November 12, at 3:15 PM there was one adult male Black Scoter at Riverbend Park in Farifax County. It was on the Potomac River which would mean that the bird was actually in Maryland but it is probably visible only from Virginia. The bird was diving in front of the boat launch and was associating with the American Coots present. I observed it at close range for about fifteen minutes. Generally the bird appeared about the same size as the coots or only slightly larger. However the scoter was probably larger as it had its head in close to its body while the coots had their necks extended forward and out. The scoter was also much slimmer than the coots. I first noticed an all black duck swimming away from me in among the coots and when it turned it had an obvious bright orange bulb at the base of the bill. The body appeared solidly black, darker than the surrounding coots. The portion of the bill visible and the eye were black. Also at Riverbend were the following: Pied-billed Grebe - 1 Canada Goose - 20 Mallard - 10 Gadwall - 2 Bufflehead- 1 American Coot - 150 Turkey Vulture - 3 Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 Mourning Dove - 4 Belted Kingfisher - 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker- 1 Downy Woodpecker - 2 Northern Flicker - 1 Pileated Woodpecker- 3 American Crow - 6 Carolina Chickadee - 8 Tufted Titmouse - 5 White-breasted Nuthatch-2 Carolina Wren - 2 Eastern Bluebird - 7 American Robin - 14 Northern Cardinal - 4 Dark-eyed Junco - 3 American Goldfinch - 6 Later, Alex Alex Merritt - age 15 Oak Hill, VA pemerritt@erols.com --part1_0.23da77e5.255e2c12_boundary--
