For the first time in a long time, I can't honestly tell you whether the Kelp Gull is being seen daily or not; even the Sea Breeze has been too busy to make daily checks on it. It was definitely seen Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 12-14, and again on Wednesday, November 17, but I simply don't have reports for the other days to indicate one way or the other. Overnight temperatures have been below freezing for the past few days, but no other significant weather has happened, so there's no good reason to believe that the Kelp Gull isn't present daily. On days when a lot of boat traffic keeps the restaurant piers full of humans, the Kelp Gull tends to leave. And the reports I do have still indicate that very early morning and mid- to late-afternoons are not reliable times for seeing the gull. If you have been down during the time period covered by this report (November 12-19) and have a sighting that I have not included, please let me know. There are still birders coming to see this bird, and I don't want them to be discouraged by this report. Jane Kostenko jkostenko@somd.lib.md.us California, Maryland Yesterday is history.
