Not surprisingly, = it was Rick Blom who picked it out for us as soon as he strolled by. It = was generally about halfway across the river a little downstream from = the viewpoint, so detailed markings could not be seen. Periodically it = got right next to one or two Common Loons, showing itself to be = significantly smaller. The bill, as well as the overall appearance, was = much more delicate than the Commons. It almost looked like a long-necked = alcid in profile, say, a Guillemot. The front of the neck seemed less = brilliantly white than the Commons' necks, with the white area less = extensive. There was a sense of a slight pale cheek patch. Incidentally, to clarify previous directions, after going north on Rt = 222 from Rt 1 for about 2 miles, you turn left on what is marked there = as Old Conowingo Rd. Continue straight as it becomes Pilotown Rd. Turn = left at the end onto Bald Friar Rd, then go to the river's edge at the = end of the dirt road section.
