I was at Black Hill Park (Montgomery County) over the weekend looking for Red-headed Woodpeckers. I did not find any, but there may be a reason - I watched a brown backed Merlin (Does anyone know how to distinguish an immature from an adult female?) hunting for about an hour in the area where the Red-headed Woodpeckers are usually seen. Also in the area were 1 each Bald Eagle, Red-tail and Cooper's Hawk. Glad my message about "migrating" immature Goshawks was noticed - hope we all get to see some in Maryland this winter. The Goshawk's food supply is apparently plentiful. Hikers leaving messages on the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club bulletin board have remarked about the high numbers of grouse they have seen.
