I participated in the DC Xmas count yesterday (Sat, 12/18), covering part of the National Arboretum. I was hoping for some winter finches and owls, and found some of them, but nothing outstanding. Highlights were: 1 Barred Owl 10 Red-breasted Nuthatch (almost exclusively in White Pines - at least I'm pretty sure they're White Pines) 1 Catbird 1 Brown Thrasher 1 Purple Finch Plus there were good numbers of Hermit Thrush (at least 4), Eastern Towhee (at least 4), Cedar Waxwing, E. Bluebird, and Am. Robins. Potential still seems good for something rare to show up, but I wasn't able to find it. Oh, and the 9 or so male Hooded Mergs (of the 18 total) were putting on a great courting display. Paul Pisano Arlington, VA cheep@erols.com
