This morning, while making the rounds of the Bluebird Trail at
Pickering Creek, it turned out to be the 'day of the Swallows'. Lots of
Tree Swallows, including one pair with a completed nest in one of the
Bluebird boxes. But also there were Rough-winged Swallows (2), ONE PURPLE
MARTIN, and a Barn Swallow (1).
On the wetland pond there was a single Blue-winged Teal along with
63 Green-winged Teal, six Northern Pintail, several Mallards and three pair
of Canada Geese that looked much like nesting pairs. Five or more Greater
Yellowlegs were also around. Overhead there were several Bald Eagles,
including four at once riding a mid-morning thermal; also a Harrier, a
Red-tailed Hawk and one Kestrel.
Sparrows included Chipping, Song, Field, Savannah, Junco and Towhee.
Brown Thrashers were singing from several spots, and one Kingfisher
rattled his way along the creek several times.

Back home near Tunis Mills, a first-of-season Forster's Tern showed
up this morning. Chipping Sparrows came yesterday, as did a single
Rough-winged Swallow amongst a group of Tree Swallows. Loons continue to
find enough fish in the creek to make them stay here. Two Double-crested
Cormorants were up here near the Leeds Creek headwaters yesterday.
