Hi Folks,

Bill Hubick and I did an evening of atlasing in the Relay NE block in
northern Anne Arundel Co. and Southwest Area Park (SWAP) in SW Baltimore
Co., with highlights being PHEASANT, SNIPE and WOODCOCK. We first visited
the difficult-to-access area north of Halethorpe Pond #11, bounded by the BW
Parkway on the west, Nursery Rd. on the south, B&A Blvd on the east, and the
Patapsco River to the north. After getting scourged by briars for nearly
two hours, we then headed to SWAP, where the conditions were much more
favorable. Sightings:

Pond #11 vicinity, N. AA Co.:
GREEN-WINGED TEAL--four flushed from marsh
CASPIAN TERN--one flyover
E. KINGBIRD--first of season for both of us
PURPLE MARTIN--several females overhead
BG GNATCATCHER--lots, and quite vocal
BROWN THRASHER--virtually impossible to find in the block last year; we had
four or five singing today in a fairly limited area

    SW Area Park, Balt. Co.:
MALLARD--hen with ten ducklings
N. HARRIER--one circling over park, then flying to southwest
RN PHEASANT--male heard crowing on two separate occasions
KILLDEER--one heard
W. SNIPE--one flushed from swampy path
AM. WOODCOCK--at least six heard peenting; one beautiful flight display
watched, three others heard
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT--three or four singing
SWAMP SPARROW--many seen today (my fingers are crossed for atlas holdouts)

The Spring Peepers were almost deafening this evening at SWAP, and the
American Toads were also quite vocal. We watched several bats that appeared
quite thick-bodied. No idea what species they were; just looked bigger than
most I've seen.
