This beautiful day brought out 25 birders for the Sunday Morning
walk in Talbot County. Jan Reese led the group to several roadside spots,
and eventually we explored several of the habitats of Pickering Creek
Audubon Center. A total of 67 species were found, including several 'firsts
of the season' for many of the birders.
Highlights:
Ovenbirds - many singing
Worm-eating Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
Merlin
Blue-winged Teal
House Wren
Brown Thrashers - elegantly singing several places
Sparrows - Song, White-throated, White-crowned, Field,
Chipping,
Junco and Towhee, and
Eastern Meadowlark.
The Pickering Creek ponds and wetlands also provided a delightful
cacophony of the calls of Fowler's Toads, Leopard Frogs and New Jersey
Chorus Frogs.
After the three hours of birding, most of the group convened for
brunch at the Roslund home (my place).
Here, we found the House Wren and heard a Belted Kingfisher. The
group seemed to enjoy the spectacle of the Canada Goose incubating on our
Osprey platform (hatching should occur next weekend). First goslings on our
part of Leeds Creek came out this morning - a total of six little yellow
rascals. So those expected from the platform will have plenty of playmates.
