This weekend I had the pleasure of a short canoe ride on the South River in Edgewater, MD near Camp Letts YMCA camp. On a small sunken island near Smithsonian Island, we saw a bird which my ignorant waterfowl eyes believed to have been a swan proudly sitting on her wonderful nest. Since I am a backyard birder, waterfowl are new to me and not taking a camera or my book (in case of losing them in a capsize) I wasn't too sure which swan I saw. The nest was very large. About double her size around and about three feet high, made of dried grasses. She was white with black markings near her beak. Would anyone be familiar with this area enough to help me make a positive identification?
Thank you
