The Carroll County Bird Club field trip to the McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley SP produced few surprises and low numbers of birds. A fly-by Barred Owl was the highlight. The pair of Yellow-throated Warblers at the Marriottsville Road Bridge finally showed themselves. There were expected numbers of Parulas and Louisiana Waterthrushes plus two small flocks of Yellow-rumped Warblers. Blue-winged Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, and Ovenbird were heard. A Scarlet Tanager was heard on the Baltimore County side of the North Branch. The trip closed with a sighting of the drake Mandarin Duck on the South Branch below Marriottsville reported before. It was hanging with three Wood Ducks. Only one or two vireos were heard, no orioles, no Cerulean, Black-&-white, or Worm-eating Warblers which breed there, and Phoebe was the only flycatcher. Lots of migrants yet to come.
