A male adult Baltimore Oriole "rattled" around in the vines of a large sycamore, chasing what appeared to be a 1st spring female, who continued gleaning in the vines. A much larger Red-shouldered Hawk chick was moving about the nest at Cabin John creek. Neither adult was seen, but at least one was heard calling in the area. The Acadian Flycatcher continues to call just north of the bridge over the canal.

A beautiful morning for Mom's Day!

Yesterday, a female Orchard Oriole was carrying nesting material to the top of a thin tree along the dyke between the two impoundments to the northwest. In that area a Warbling Vireo was seen and heard. A Prothonotary male was singing in the back end of the first of these two impoundments. Two Baltimore Orioles were seen in the same area, with another two heard singing.

Two Green Herons were in the same vicinity. A Yellow Warbler was singing and mvoing along the east/west dyke. A Mute Swan was in the impoundment to the southeast. A Worm-eating Warbler sang from the cedars/pines just beyond the impoundments to the west. Several Chestnut-sided Warblers were in the fields beyond the impoundments (west, then north). A female American Redstart displayed along a branch hanging out over one of the further fields. Many Gray Catbirds were seen/heard in the brushy areas bordering the fields. Only one Wood Thrush was heard singing, as opposed to last weekend when there were at least half a dozen.

Good birding,
