Apologize in advance if this is off-topic, but my fiancee and I will be in
the Norfolk area next weekend and were thinking of going to Great Dismal
Swamp. Was wondering if anyone has experience there, and whether it's too
late for most of the spring migrants? Any especially good spots? Thanks in
advance.
Now, for the report. My 12-year-old, Adam, who thankfully is still
interested in birding and walking with Dad, and I returned to Schoolhouse
Pond in Upper Marlboro, MD, on Sunday May 16, from 8:45 to 11:45 a.m.
Highlights were:
Northern Parula
Common Yellowthroat (heard)
Blackpoll Warbler
Blue-Grey Gnatcatcher
White-Eyed Vireo
ALSO:
Cedar Waxwing
Wood Duck (male and female, with chicks, seen separately)
Eastern Kingbird
Eastern Pheobe
AND THE USUAL: Red-Winged Blackbird, Great Blue Heron (2), Cardinal, Song
Sparrow, Osprey, Black Vulture, Canada Goose, Mallard, Barn Swallow,
Northern Rough-Winged Swallow, House Sparrow
OTHER WILDLIFE: Painted Turtles, Muskrat (2)
The trip pushed young Adam over the 100 mark on his U.S. lifelist.
Good birding!
