Roosevelt Island, Wash, DC, 18 May 04, 1130-1230: The eerie, other worldly
sound of cicadas filled the air on RI today. Barn Swallows were busy
chasing insects over the Potomac, returning to feed their young under the
access bridge. A pair of N. Rough-winged Swallows collected mud and grass
for a nest they were constructing beneath the Roosevelt Bridge. A Box
Turtle bumped into me, a mature male judging by its size, flared carapace
and dimpled plastron. And a White-tailed Deer stood firm on the swamp
boardwalk a mere 30 feet away. Bold behavior I thought until its newborn,
bleating, speckled fawn presented itself in the grass below. A big smile on
my face that encounter did place. Twenty-five species observed/heard to
include the following birds of interest: 1-Black-crowned Night Heron,
1-Spotted Sandpiper, 1-E. Wood Peewee (heard), 2-N. Parula (heard), 1-Yellow
Warbler, and 1-Prothonotary Warbler.
