A morning walk in the National Arboretum turned up two rather late
White-throated Sparrows and a female Tennessee Warbler, both in the
azalea collection. Other birds present included: Acadian Flycatcher,
Red-eyed Vireo, Northern Parula, Magnolia Warbler, Common Yellowthroat,
and Scarlet Tanager. Several Red-shouldered Hawks put on a display over
the meadows just to the east of the azalea collection.

In the late afternoon I took a second trip, this time to the C&O Canal
in Georgetown and Montgomery County. The din of the cicadas there made
it very difficult to find songbirds. The were two breeding pairs of Wood
Ducks near the Chain Bridge, with ducklings already hatched. I also
found both cuckoo species, two Yellow-billed Cuckoos in mile 4 and a
single Black-billed Cuckoo near Little Falls. Other birds present:
Common Nighthawk, Great Crested Flycatcher, Northern Rough-winged
Swallow, Warbling Vireo, and Baltimore Oriole.
