While birding at Blue Mash on Sunday, besides seeing an impressive
number of bird species (including both yellow-billed and black-billed
cuckoos), we observed a diversity of butterfly species as well. Due to
the presence of numerous host plant species and many nectar sources in
bud, this will be a hotspot for butterflies during the month of June.
Here's what we saw:
black swallowtail
eastern tiger swallowtail
spicebush swallowtail
clouded sulphur
orange sulphur
sleepy orange
cabbage white
summer azure
eastern tailed blue
pearl crescent
little wood satyr
great spangled fritillary
variegated fritillary
red-spotted purple
silver-spotted skipper
wild indigo duskywing
northern cloudywing
least skipper
zabulon skipper
hobomok skipper
common sootywing
long-dash skipper
